Exercise Aerial perspective in rural landscape

Imagined view of a rural landscape pushing aerial perspective techniques:

  • Darker and warmer colour moving toward the foreground
  • Darker wash at the top of sky, paler as it reaches the horizon line
  • Distant hills painted in blue wash

Assignment 4 Landscape painting with mixed elements and features

Working on ideas for Assignment 4,  possibly using Stonehenge as the subject matter which should give me a tick against rocks as one of the elements to be included in this assignment.  Additional elements would people and a not too busy sky (enough going on at  ground level)

Brief for this assignment:

compose a landscape that includes at least three of the following eight aspects or elements of landscape studied in the Part 4 of the course:

  • Linear or aerial perspective
  • Sky and or water
  • Trees or rocks
  • Animals or human figures

Study 1:

All the action happening at the same level, not sure a I am happy with the composition. Humans figures not that generous.

Study 2:

Again Stonehenge, pulling figures down into the foreground.

Exercise Painting moving water

Again drawing from recent photographs of the cornish coastline for reference, here i am  trying to capture the movement of the sea at the base of the cliffs. Application of masking fluid slightly hit an miss, need to practice masking smaller areas.

Keeping the sky a simple plain wash, to help keep the focus on the movement of sea.

Exercise Painting still and disturbed water

Two studies where  I using the distorted shadows to help describe the area of the water's surface, in the first study in addition to this I have used the same sky water colour mix to paint the river.

Scratch technique used here to show where the bird has disturbed the water.

Exercise Sky dominated landscape

Several quick studies, landscape with limited reference to land and more detail in the sky,  in an attempt to make the cloud formations  the focal point of the paintings

Exercise Painting rocks

Study based on recent photograph taken on Fistral beach Newquay. Pleased with the composition, need to think about how I could improve the rock in the foreground.

Another painting done, again referencing a recent photograph taken with this exercise in mind.

Exercise Human figure in the landscape

Figures in landscape, initially drew a more finished painting, but wasn't entirely happy with the figure so practice several loser studies.

Following painting started out as a cloud study but wasn't happy with it so reused it here, adding tree and the figure pushing a  bike.

Wet early morning walk on the sea front, wife wearing dark kagool in the photograph I was using a reference but didn't want to much detail in the clothing... add an air of mystery.

Exercise Still life with water

Here I trying to capture the effect of objects sitting in water in the  first picture I have placed unpeeled  potatoes into a saucepan and was hoping to see some noticeable  refraction  but this was not the case only slightly  higher tonal value where  the potato was in the water.

In the second study I eggs in a bowl I have been less true to what I was observing and have tried to exaggerate the fact the the eggs have been placed in water.

Exercise Painting trees

Recent trip to Newquay able to spend some time on tree studies with hotel room offering a view of some trees by the river Gannel.

Study 1:

Study 2:

Study 3:

Bottom of the trees obscured from view so some artistic licence used to complete this one.

Study 4:

Birch trees in local woods.

Oil painting Whitstable Harbour

Break from watercolours first weekend November offered some nice weather which was interrupted by the odd shower.
